Sofas are also commonly called couches. Until the 20th century a couch was referred to a long upholstered seat with one end inclined, high enough to provide a back rest. In the UK the word sofa is by far the more common term compared to couch. The word sofa made it's entry into written english in 1717. Sofa was originally an Arabic word for a raised section of floor, furnished with rugs and cushions.
Over the years the term sofa and couch have become the same thing. You and I know it as the thing you sit on while watching tv. Sofas are often found in living rooms, family rooms, hearth rooms, and even bedrooms.
